– GMDSS system
The Global Maritime Distress Safty System (GMDSS) is a set of communication guidelines, equipment, and protocols designed to enhance safety at sea and provide immediate assistance to damaged ships, boats, and aircraft.
GMDSS includes several different systems, some of which are new and some of which have been in use for years. The function of these systems is as follows:
Warning (including locating the crashed ship)
Search and rescue coordination
Find the position of the crashed ship
Send safety information at sea
Typical communications at sea
Bridge to bridge communication (for very long distances)
The GMDSS communication equipment that is installed on a vessel depends on the tonnage of the vessel and the sea area in which the vessel is moving. Pleasure boats, for example, do not require the communication equipment used on a cargo ship, while ocean-going ships are well equipped.
